If you are out of range, you get some chopping and then the signal drops off. I prefer this to the hissing I would get using the analog 140.
I red some comments before I bought them that they are difficult to pair - I didn't find that at all. In fact, as soon as powered up the transmitter and put the batteries in, they came right on! You will venture forth into a new world of audio pleasure. If the Sennheiser RS-180 was a painting it would be a masterpiece by Kandinsky or Dali; a sculpture, La Pieta via Michelangelo, a song, something by Lennon & McCartney. SACD were demoed both as 2-channel & Multi-channel. The initial impression with the RS 180's is their extreme musicality. Every time you take the earphones from the charging cradle you have to synch the earphones to the cradle. This is an annoyance.
It seems to have a huge amount of mid-range, which just does not work for TV listening. If you're a purist audiophile who spends most of his time listening to music, these may indeed have the better audio quality. However, there are a few things that really frustrate me about these cans. The much mentioned volume buttons that are too small are just one. Let me just say that he hasn't found the magical area where the sounds begins to fade. One of the best features of these headphones is that they are open, so even though nobody can hear what he is listening to, he can still hear what's going on around him. Your mileage may differ. The base-station cradle unit is relatively compact and hides behind my wide-screen LCD display, out of sight. I am so glad I spent the money for these headphones. I have been researching various models and brands and I decided to go with these due to the reviews here on Amazon.
They work fine out on my front porch, though. I've used them in all the rooms in my apartment without any issues, including my kitchen which has metal cabinets.
The ONLY thing they need is a remote, as the control buttons are too close together making adjustments difficult while on your head. They are very comfortable and can be worn for extended lengths of time. It links up between headset and transmitter base in an instant. No tuning required as with the analog types. I have only two issues with this headset. The range of operation is not what I thought it should be.

The sound ranges are not high, and the sound isn't contained. Seriously for the cost, you could not do better. infrared wireless headphones. They do fully enclose your ear - they do not sit on top of your ear like some headphones. I had no clue how good these where likely to sound. KIDS HEADPHONES.
