Pro Tools Lessons for Voice-Overs

by Catherine Marshall

When Such A Voice started teaching Pro Tools for Voice Actors workshops around the country a couple months ago, we had no idea they would end up being as popular as they are! We decided we needed to offer these Pro Tools workshops tailored specifically for voice actors because it takes more than a pretty voice to make it in this industry! The three things a voice over artist needs to know is: voice-over technique, how to market oneself, and how to record & edit a voice over job to a professional caliber. With this in mind, we sent one of our best engineers from our Post Production department, Aaron Sullivan, to major cities around the country to guide students through a weekend long, hands-on workshop.

Faith Cripps, a student from our Boston workshop, says, "I found out about the Pro Tools Workshop in an email, and because it was being held through Such A Voice I knew they would teach me just the information I need to know about recording and editing voice overs -- and not a bunch of other information that I wouldn't care about or use."

We ask students to bring their own equipment to the Pro Tools Workshops in order to get the best experience possible. Plus, Aaron is there to help students trouble shoot problems they may be experiencing with their own computers or set-up. The workshop starts with a general two-hour session, in which Aaron goes over recording, editing, mixing and bouncing files for voice over jobs.

"Aaron was extremely helpful and professional, and he taught us in a language that we could all understand," says Faith. "He was receptive to any and all questions, and he was able to answer them all without making anyone feel like it was a basic or stupid question."

The workshop continues from there on out in small groups of three or four. Aaron spends four hours with each group, working on their personal equipment and helping them troubleshoot, record and edit right there on the spot. Students get his personal attention, and they also have the advantage of watching him work with other students on other related material.

"The best part of the weekend was that Aaron made me realize how simple it all is!" Faith continues, "Before I took this workshop, I would get so frustrated because it would take me forever to troubleshoot Pro Tools on my own, look up answers online, and flip through pages in my manual. These skills that Aaron taught us in the Pro Tools Workshop are what I need for my home recording studio. Now, I know how to use all of my equipment efficiently, and I can get my voiceover jobs to the clients quickly and efficiently. It's so exciting to know that I now have more time to produce higher quality work!"

Many students like Faith would have struggled with the technical aspect of being a voice actor have come to workshops all over the country.
